Kelly Morgan New IFAS Director

IMMOKALEE, FL. -- Dr. Kelly Morgan will be the next director of the Southwest Florida Research and Education Center. Kelly will assume leadership of the center on August 1.

Under the current leadership of Dr. Calvin Arnold, who is retiring, SWFREC has enjoyed a fresh infusion of faculty talent, vastly expanded facilities, and a renewed engagement from producers. Indeed, the very first point Kelly made in laying out his vision for the future was to continue this momentum.

Kelly has been in Immokalee since 2004, but he’s been affiliated with UF since 1993, when he started at the Citrus Research and Education Center, or since the 1970s when he began studies toward the first of his three UF degrees.

Most recently, he ran the Extension agricultural best management practices program. Kelly knows BMPs, he knows producers, he knows FDACS, and he knows how centers run. That should reduce the slope of the learning curve that all new center directors experience.

Don Davis Dies At 82

Donald Allen Davis, age 82, of LaBelle, passed away March 22, 2018 in Lehigh Acres. He was born in Fountain, FL, on May 25, 1935 to the late Theodore Roosevelt and the late Susie Mozelle (Melvin) Davis.

Don was raised in Panama City, FL and graduated from Bay High School Class of 1955. He joined the United States Army and proudly served his country as a Corporal in the late 1950's. He moved to LaBelle in 1964 and started one of his many businesses and also started serving the local community in civic organizations such as LaBelle Jaycees as President and was one of the founding fathers of Swamp Cabbage Festival.

He served as President of the Greater Chamber of Commerce. He raised the money himself to build the Chamber of Commerce building which still stands today and was voted Man of the Year in 1992 for his efforts. He also served in the Lions Club and The Rotary Club. He served as County Commissioner for Hendry County for 14 years in the 1970's and 1980's and more recently was elected to serve from 2012-2016.

He started and sold many businesses through his more than 50 years in LaBelle and still owned Don's Steakhouse and Big V Restaurant. Don was instrumental in the growth of the community that he loved so much.

He helped establish the Davis Pratt Park with fellow county commissioner Don Pratt. He was an avid golfer and played in numerous tournaments across the country. He loved to sing and did it anywhere he could find a stage…from Tootsies in Nashville to his own stage in the lounge at the steakhouse.

He thought everyone should work hard and he did all 82 years of his life. He won numerous awards through the years, too many to be displayed in any one place…most of them are just leaned against each other on the floor. He was still a humble man and loved God. He helped many people that none of us will ever know about. He gave generously of his time and money without request of a receipt. According to Don "the man upstairs knows about my giving and he is the only one that counts".

Don or Big V as most people called him is survived by his children: Ricky Thibodeaux, Patsy Bostick (Doug), Teri Gail Armstrong (Stacy), Paula Sue Hall, Kimberly Perkins (Chad) all of LaBelle, sister Carolyn Davis of Panama City, 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren, companion Shirley Dooley and the mother of his children Iris Davis as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and very dear friends. He was predeceased in death by his parents, brothers: Carl E. Davis and Daniel Wayne Davis and sister: Peggy Ann Davis and nephew Ward Facer.

Big V will certainly be missed by all who knew him. He gave freely of his advice and you always knew where you stood with him.

Funeral services will be held March 27, 2018 at 12:00 pm at Carlson Memorial United Methodist Church, LaBelle with Pastor Preston Long officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Carlson Memorial United Methodist Church. Entombment will be in Fort Denaud Cemetery at a later date.

Fuccillo Kia - Bringing Customers In For The Huge Kill

Fuccillo Kia "Bumps" Prices By Thousands Of Dollars

CAPE CORAL, FL. -- Beware of sales gimmicks misleading buyers at Fuccillo Kia stores, bringing customers in and taking "huge" money from the less than expert negotiating consumer.

(Photos: Phony Monroney "Bunp Sticker" At Fuccillo Kia raising prices by $2,995 over MSRP and at right bumping price $9,995 over MSRP)

Without hard bargaining, the average customer will find no "discounts" at Fuccillo Kia of Cape Coral because every single vehicle here has the price artificially raised by three thousand dollars with a "bump" sticker attached to the right of the Monroney sticker and a dealer fee of $795 added to each sale.

Fucillio raises the price of each vehicle by attaching a "Phony Monroney" to the side of the official Monroney sticker, raising selling prices on all Fuccillo vehicles by at least $2,295 plus a $795 "dealer fee" which is not disclosed at all on the sticker.

The "Monroney" label is required by Federal law in the United States to be displayed on the side rear window of all new automobiles and trucks and includes the listing of official information about the car and the manufacturer's suggested retail price, the MSRP, as well as gas mileage numbers and equipment installed at the factory.

One vehicle's price we found was actually "bumped" up by $9,995. The Fuccillo selling price on all new vehicles is raised by including dealer installed "extras," in Fuccillo's case: the infamous "nitrogen" in tires which according to Consumer Reports saying any benefit is not worth the extra cost (the air we breathe is already about 80% nitrogen/20% oxygen), pin stripes, and door edge guards. In no case are the "extras" worth anywhere near $2,295.

We asked 5-year veteran Fuccillo senior sales representative Michael L'Herault why nitrogen was used to fill the tires instead of plain air. He didn't have an answer immediately but later said he inquired inside and was told that nitrogen increased gas mileage by "2 miles per gallon." He didn't have an answer for proof or who makes that claim. Tire manufacturers say there is no need for nitrogen in passenger tires.

By raising prices on ALL vehicles $2,295 and adding the $795 dealer fee above the MSRP, it gives the sales manager plenty of room to negotiate without really giving away profit for Fuccillo. While any car dealer is entitled to a profit, consumer advocates say it's unconscionable to bump prices up by thousands with nearly worthless dealer installed extras, and add a $795 dealer fee on every vehicle, all of which is pure profit to the dealer, while sales people do not share in commission on those extra add ons.

As at most car dealerships you can expect huge sales person turnover, as sales people will easily be disillusioned by the 25% commission they get on  the net profit of each sale (sales price minus dealer cost, the "dealer invoice"), but they DON"T get a commission on the $795 dealer fee and dealer installed "extras," only owner Billy Fuccillo gets to put those thousands in his pocket on every sale. Customers also should realize everyone is on commission including the service department, and customers are advised to be extra careful what services are recommended when they come in for maintenance, tires, or repair services.

Can You Really Get Those Low Payments Advertised?

Leasing? Low Payments? Don't expect to get those advertised  low low $189 monthly payments. To get any of those low payments you must have top notch credit scores and pay thousands of dollars down. Fuccillo and all car dealers make more profit on leasing and loan financing and later repairing vehicles than they do selling the car. So prepare before you visit to talk to your bank or credit union before accepting the dealer's finance department offer and you'll most likely save thousands over the next several years.

And bring ear protection to Fuccillo's stores if you're noise sensitive. The Saturday we were there the office was so tremendously noisy it's a wonder anyone can hear conversation there with loud music and dozens of folks talking at once in the room. Maybe that's a sales technique...fatiguing customers to give in to high pressure sales tactics?

Fuccillo Kia of Cape Coral has maintained an "F" rating by the Better Business Bureau continuously for many years. According to the BBB, among the reasons for the failing rating are "complaints filed against business," and "failure to respond" as well as the negative customer reviews.

Advice to all vehicle shoppers; shop carefully at several dealers for an "out the door" price including all dealer fees, document preparation fee, tag fees, dealer installed "extras" which are always grossly overpriced, and pick the lowest price. Use your bank and credit bureau for the best financing, extended warranties are most usually a bad deal, and a huge profit maker for the dealership selling them. An exception may be an extended warranty through the manufacturer, but even so usually an expensive add on.

Principals at Fuccillo are Xavier Villarreal, General Manager and William B. Fuccillo, President/Director.

Walking The Florida Keys - Bob Kranich

Excerpts From A Walk Across Florida

I had arrived at the Bahia Honda Park. I was thinking about a nice swim, shower, meal, and camp. It wasn’t to be, the park ranger told me. They were closed. Not to be discouraged, I crossed the road. On the other side were roadside picnic tables, with concrete roofs and an entire beautiful sand and windswept beach….all to myself! Not only that, I had the fantastic and awesome view of the Bahia Honda railroad bridge heading across to the Spanish Harbor Key with U. S. Highway No. 1 hanging precariously on top.

This is the life! I placed my pack down next to one of the picnic tables.

That night I put my plastic tarp down right on the sand of the beach and slept on top of my sleeping bag. There was a delightful wind all night and no mosquitoes. In the morning I walked along the newly washed beach. There were shells of all colors, a Portuguese-man-of-war lying in the damp sand, and a mystery: Footprints in the sand. I never did see or hear anyone. I went for a great swim and as luck would have it, I found a shower stand at one end of the parking area. A little breakfast and I was off back to the road- side in front of the huge bridge. As I waiting for a car to take me over my last hitch-hike, I pondered my previous days total mileage, 22 miles hiking, plus 16 additional miles that were hitchhiking.

This Bahia Honda Bridge over Bahia Honda Channel is the really big one, as far as height is concerned. The water here is the deepest, 24 to 35 feet. The piers were built the same way and looked similar to the seven-mile bridge piers, but they were larger and taller. By using Pratt and Parker Camelback  trusses the engineers were able to reduce the number of concrete pilings from 64 to 34. This bridge was one of the last items to be completed in 1912, just in time for Flagler to ride his railroad from Miami to Key West. After the 1935 hurricane, the highway was completed in 1938. In the case of the Bahia Honda Bridge, it was too much trouble to widen the actual trusses so they built the highway on top of them. As a tribute to Flagler’s engineering team and workers, not one of the F.E.C. Railway bridges was ever damaged by hurricanes.

Back in the 1900’s this railroad was a tremendous engineering feat built by steam engines, intensive man-labor and unsophisticated tools by today’s standards. In fact it was even called the 8th wonder of the world. Today the bridges and road have been replaced by projects that dwarf the original railroad and later highway.

A Department of Environment Protections Office of Greenways and Trails is working together with the Florida Department of Transportation and Monroe County to build a 106 mile Hiker-Biker trail from Key Largo to Key West. They are hoping to use the old bridges and roads where possible. People will be able to travel the route that I did with ease; however, there will be a much greater population surrounding them.

I put my thumb out and immediately a car slowed down  and stopped. It was an elderly man and his wife in a station wagon. They were going to Key West to spend a couple of days. I told them what I was doing in the brief time I had, only one mile. We went out on that narrow bridge built on the top of the railroad bridge trusses. I figured that we were approximately 40 feet above the water, and then we went up again another 10 feet at the longest truss which was in the middle of the crossing. It may not seem a lot at today’s standards but on that narrow road it was impressive. They dropped me off as soon as we got across. I thanked them and they continued on.

Sheriff Wants To Arm School Staff With Concealed Guns

LABELLE, FL. -- Hendry County Sheriff Steve Whidden this morning outlined his plan to put handguns in the area's schools. Hendry county has schools in LaBelle and Clewiston and Superintendent of Schools Paul Puletti says the idea is going to take extensive working out the details and first must go through the School Board to see if they want to fund the plan, which proposes to have the school system pay for the guns and training of school staff.

Puletti says putting concealed weapons in the hands of teacher may be problematic because of the teacher's union and says some teachers may not want to take on that role in any event.

Sheriff Whidden says he proposed the idea to Puletti after the February 14 student deaths in Broward County.

Lake Okeechobee Prescribed Burn March 2

Moore Haven, FL– The Florida Forest Service in collaboration with South Florida Water Management District, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be conducting a prescribed burn on Friday, March 2, 2018, weather permitting. The prescribed burn will consist of approximately 7,000 acres of dried-out marsh on the rim of Lake Okeechobee between the Indian Prairie Canal north to the Pearce Canal. Access to the navigational trails through the marsh, may be limited temporarily during the burn for safety reasons.

“Prescribed burns play a critical role in enhancing the safety and effectiveness of wildfire response, reducing wildfire risk, and safeguarding people and property,” explained Forest Area Supervisor Joe deBree, Florida Forest Service. “In 2017, firefighters responded to seven wildfires on Lake Okeechobee that burned approximately 2,400 acres. Wildfires like these have the potential to threaten homes and lives, impede visibility on the highways and tie-up firefighting resources. However, under the right weather parameters with adequate equipment and resources, Friday’s organized prescribed burn can protect the public’s safety while improving ecosystem health.”

Prescribed burning around the shallow-water portions of Lake Okeechobee can improve the breeding and feeding grounds for fish, waterfowl, wading birds, the Everglades snail kite, and other wildlife populations. Fire removes the dead aquatic vegetation that would otherwise settle to the bottom of the lake and decompose, covering up the natural sandy bottom, making it difficult for new aquatic plants to grow. In addition, fire enables more sunlight to reach the lake bottom, allowing the spread of a more diverse mix of plants on the lake by thinning out fast-spreading cattails that block sunlight.

In order to minimize the smoke impact on nearby towns and roads, prescribed burns are conducted when weather conditions are suitable. The final decision to burn is made daily, after reviewing the Predicted Fire Weather Forecast.
